Komagata Yumi & Soujirou

Yumi, despite being the consort of Shishio, appears to know nothing of Soujirou’s fighting abilities. As she and Shishio left Shingetsu Village, she questions him on Soujirou. During Soujirou’s final battle with Kenshin, she stats that it is her first time seeing him fight.

Shishio-sama. What is this “tenken” you spoke of? [Yumi, ch70]

Soujirou and Yumi also have minor interactions with one another. They are seen in several panels with one another and in a conversation. However, the dialogue is not shown and only physical actions or singular words are given.

However, there is more to their relationship than it would first seem.

When speaking to Soujirou, Yumi would refer to him as “kid” or “boy”. Rarely would she address him by his first name (and even then, without any honorifics). Soujirou, on the other hand, would refer to her as “Yumi-san”.

However, she does give Soujirou a sense of respect as she acknowledges his “great skills” and that he was the strongest of the Juppongatana.

There are also other times when she admonishes him. For example, she called him ignorant as he had no knowledge of the Nagasone Kotetsu. During the gathering of the Juppongatana, Yumi scolded Soujirou for leaving Shishio’s compound.

On the other hand, there does seem to be a real connection between the two characters. Yumi knew Soujirou well enough to notice that something was indeed wrong with him during his fight with Kenshin simply through Soujirou stating that he was annoyed by Kenshin.

She also showed a measure of concern for Soujirou after his defeat. She allowed him to rest on her lap as well as asking Soujirou to take care of himself once she realized that he intended to leave the Juppongatana.

Soujirou: Stay? Your lap is so nice…

Yumi: …You have changed. [ch135]

In the end, Soujirou expressed sadness on hearing that she died along with Shishio in the fight against Kenshin.
